Panama City Beach Sports Complex CFO arrested for theft

PANAMA CITY BEACH — The Chief Financial Officer of Panama City Beach Sports Complex was arrested and charged with embezzling $37,000, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.

Darren Landry, 51, of Walton County, has been charged with grand larceny and ongoing fraud, according to a BCSO news release,

Employees of the Convention and Visitors Bureau noticed discrepancies in the sports complex’s accounting records last week, the press release said. A thorough review of records showed what appeared to be ongoing theft from the resort’s ticket sales, as well as the submission of fraudulent documentation to CVB employees.

Finding evidence of theft, Convention and Visitors Bureau officials filed a report with the sheriff’s office. A BCSO investigation found Landry embezzled $37,000 in the past year, the news release said.

As part of his daily work, Landry was in charge of the revenue collected by the complex and had access to all funds and accounting documents. Investigators believe Landry was altering the amount of money received at the resort on accounting documentation to hide the amount of money he was taking.

Landry was arrested on warrants with the help of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. He was incarcerated in the Walton County Jail and will be extradited to Bay County for his first court appearance.
