The City of Ripon has appointed a new Chief Financial Officer/Deputy City Administrator.

Amanda Toney

On December 14, the Common Council approved the appointment of Amanda Toney to this position.

Prior to being appointed as the new CFO, Toney served as Treasurer/Real Estate Lister for Green Lake County.

According to her LinkedIn profile, she has been treasurer of Green Lake County since 2017 and treasurer of the city of Brooklyn since 2012.

Toney was also a finalist for a city administrator position in Omro.

The city of Ripon had eight to nine qualified candidates, but only four candidates, including Toney, were interviewed, according to city administrator Adam Sonntag.

the Commonwealth caught up with Toney to learn more about what attracted her to the position and her goals serving the City of Ripon.

Here is the conversation:

Q. What attracted you to the position of CFO/Deputy City Administrator of Ripon?

A. This position has interested me for some time. The responsibilities of this position are things that interest me and that I enjoy doing. I enjoy doing everyday tasks, but I also thrive when involved in new challenges.

Q. What was the interview process like?

A. Similar to any other interview process. I spoke with Adam Sonntag first before submitting my resume to make sure the position was still open.

After speaking with him, I sent him my CV. I then called for an interview with Adam, the mayor and town clerk, which lasted about an hour.

After that, I heard from Adam that they would like to continue contacting my references. After talking to all my references, I was offered the job. I thought about the offer over the weekend before accepting.

Q. What do you expect from this position?

A. Being able to put my skills that I learned in the county to use at another level of government. I love the path Ripon is heading and am thrilled to be a part of it.

Q. Could you describe your role as Green Lake County Treasurer and how it will impact your work for the City of Ripon?

A. As County Treasurer, one of my primary statutory responsibilities is to receive and disburse all county funds. I am also responsible for all county investments, disbursement of levy dollars, and management of sales tax dollars, to name a few. I think these qualities will serve me well in my new role as CFO.

Q. What attracted you to working in local government?

A. I grew up in local government and really benefited from it. My mother started as county treasurer when I was 5 years old.

Thanks to her, I was able to get a first-hand look at how local government works.

I then started as Treasurer for the City of Brooklyn in 2012 and really enjoy seeing how all of the government entities work together. The more I am involved in local government, the more I like it.

Q. How is working in government rewarding?

A. Honestly, I’ve always enjoyed helping the public and I find it very rewarding. For example, when I can help someone understand how their tax bill is calculated and what numbers make up their tax amount, I really like that.

Explaining a process that has many layers in it in a way that makes the audience feel more educated gives me great joy.

PANAMA CITY BEACH — Officials at the Panama City Beach sports complex said they fired the recently arrested chief financial officer after he allegedly embezzled $37,000.

Darren Landry, a 51-year-old Walton County resident, has been charged with grand larceny and an ongoing fraud scheme, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.

“Through our process and reporting, we have noticed some irregularities in financial reporting,” said Resort CEO Jason Clement. “We investigated and determined that funds were missing.”

Finding evidence of theft, officials from the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the resort’s management company, filed a report with the sheriff’s office. A BCSO investigation found Landry embezzled $37,000 over the past year, the BCSO reported.

As part of his daily work, Landry was not only in charge of the revenue collected by the complex, but also had access to all funds and accounting documents.

Investigators said they believe he changed the amount of money taken from the resort’s accounting records to hide the amount of money he was stealing.

Landry was arrested on warrants with the help of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. He was incarcerated in the Walton County Jail and will be extradited to Bay County for his first court appearance.

“The good news is that the system, the review process detected the irregularities and the discrepancies,” Clément said. “This is a public complex that the taxpayers have ultimately paid for and when you are the custodian of anybody’s money – but certainly the public’s money – the public’s trust is one thing. critically important.”

FARMINGTON – Franklin County commissioners voted unanimously on Tuesday to hire Diane Dunham from Temple as the new chief financial officer.

Diane Dunham of Temple was hired Tuesday as Franklin County’s new finance director. Town of Wilton photo

Dunham is currently the Town Clerk of Wilton and the Registrar of Electors.

She replaces Vicky Braley, who took over as Acting County Clerk earlier this month.

Dunham has 10 years of municipal experience, Braley told commissioners. She will start on December 6 with a salary of $ 21.31 an hour and will work a 37 1/2 hour week.

In another case, commissioners voted 2-1 to give employees a bonus of $ 1,000 each from American Rescue Plan Act funds to work during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are 62 full-time county employees and five part-time employees.

Once someone is hired to oversee the county’s nearly $ 5.9 million ARPA fund, commissioners agreed to give employees an additional $ 1,000 in January. President Terry Brann of Wilton and Commissioner Lance Harvell of Farmington voted in favor, while Commissioner Clyde Barker of Strong opposed the vote.

In the remaining cases, commissioners have scheduled a public hearing for 3:15 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the county courthouse on a proposed $ 1.5 million unorganized territory budget for 2022-2023. Commissioners must accept the budget by December 31 so that it can be sent to the state legislature for review.

The proposal represents an increase of $ 131,836 over the current budget. Most of the increase is attributed to the addition of $ 50,000 to the paving reserve account and a $ 42,000 increase in the cost of snow removal for the townships of Washington and Perkins.

A man who cleared thousands of pounds in fraudulent payments into his own accounts in just five months as the finance director of a leisure company has escaped jail.

Jason Cherrington had pleaded guilty to a breach of trust fraud charge while working for Active Nation UK Ltd at Hatton Rock Business Park near Warwick.

Cherrington, 37, of Frederick Neal Avenue, Eastern Green, Coventry, was sentenced to 20 months in prison suspended for two years, including drug rehab and rehab activity.

Read more criminal news here

Sentencing him to Warwick Crown Court, recorder Penelope Stanistreet-Keen also imposed a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for two months to “make sure you don’t disappear on a bender” and ordered him to pay £ 340 in fees.

Prosecutor Raj Punia said Cherrington was employed as a chief financial officer by Active Nation, which operates sports and fitness facilities across the country, in April 2019.

But he was fired in September of the same year because he had failed his probationary period – and it was only after he left that his dishonesty was exposed.

His job had given him access to the company’s finances and he was authorized to make payments of up to £ 2,500.

The person who took over his role noticed an unusual payment reference, supposedly made to a vendor called J Foy for £ 2,472 – but not made in the normal form.

A check was then made on Cherrington’s bank account which had a credit that appeared to match this payment.

Realizing that this was not a genuine transaction, an investigation began which showed that in August and September 2019 Cherrington had made 12 bogus payments totaling £ 18,637.

Of these, 11 went to two of his personal accounts, while the 12th payment of £ 2,423 went to a friend whom the police later spoke to.

When Cherrington was arrested, he said that in 2019 he gambled and drank more than he ever had, had debt issues and fully recognized what he was doing. did.

William Douglas-Jones, defending, said: “Mr. Cherrington has admitted his conduct in an interview in a full and frank manner, and my mitigation focuses on the suspension of any custodial sentence Your Honor deems. appropriate.

“It was about nine months between the interview and his first court appearance, so this case had been hanging over him for some time. “

He said Cherrington’s previous drinking and driving conviction was “indicative of his drinking problems” and that at the time he was playing to try and solve his debt problems.

Mr Douglas-Jones said Cherrington now has a new job and did not tell his employer about the case when he pleaded, but now did and had to attend a meeting with a manager – but hoped keep his job.

He also initially failed to tell his 19-year-old partner, who is a lawyer, and, with a young son, she would have a hard time if he wasn’t there.

And Mr Douglas-Jones said although there had been no formal claim for compensation, Cherrington had indicated he could afford to pay £ 400 a month.

“You took the money because your personal debts were out of control due to your gambling and alcohol abuse.

“I’m afraid you continued to work in the financial industry and didn’t tell your employer.

“I’m told you’ve done it now, but you’re used to only telling the truth when you have no other choice.”

“I know little about the impact on the business, but no business can lose that amount of money without impact. “

Telling him that she was ready to suspend the sentence, she added: “It seems to me that you are at a crossroads. The curfew is to make sure you don’t disappear on a bender for days at a time.
