(NEXSTAR) – Have you ever wondered how close you came to being among the wealthiest in your community? New analysis from SmartAsset shows how hard it takes to be in the top 1% in each of the 50 states.

Using tax data from the IRS, the site was able to determine the minimum income required to be among the highest earners in each state. These figures were then adjusted to 2021 dollars using the Consumer Price Index for Urban and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

States were ranked based on the adjusted gross income of those in the top 1%. Adjusted gross income, or AGI, is your gross income minus adjustments to income, according to the IRS. Gross income includes wages, capital gains, retirement distribution and any other income. Adjustments can include student loan interest, child support payments, or contributions to a retirement account.

Your AGI is used to determine the credits and deductibles you are entitled to when filing your taxes.

In its analysis, SmartAsset found that an American family needs a gross income of $597,815 to fall into the top 1% nationally. In the United States, those in the top 1% earn twice as much as those in the top 5%. A gross income of $240,712 is enough to place you in the top 5%.

The benchmark to be considered among the top 1% varies by state. In Illinois, for example, you would need an income of at least $627,000.

The income was to be considered among the top 1% in each state based on analysis by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the IRS. (smart asset)

Here are the five states with the highest adjusted gross incomes to consider among the top 1%:

  1. Connecticut: $896,490
  2. Massachusetts: $810,256
  3. New York: $777,126
  4. New Jersey: $760,462
  5. California: $745,314

Technically, Washington, DC, which is not a state, has the highest AGI to be considered one of the top earners at $918,000.

Alternatively, here are the five states with the lowest AGIs for the top 1%:

  1. West Virginia: $350,212
  2. Mississippi: $361,462
  3. New Mexico: $384,427
  4. Arkansas: $411,633
  5. Kentucky: $412,836

Aren’t you landing in the top 1% in your state? You may still be considered “wealthy” in your community. Go Banking Rates recently published an analysis showing how rich you should be considered in 50 US cities.

In Boston, for example, the lowest income required to be considered “rich” is $159,024. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, an income of $106,866 makes you rich.

Southern California entrepreneur Ron Hashemi wins regional award

January 10, 2022 // Franchising.com // CHARLOTTE, NC – The downsizing of the company in 2009 led Ron Hashemi to seek a new career, and his love of cars brought him to Maaco, the workshop of American auto body and the leader in the $ 38 billion auto paint and collision industry. Hashemi was recently recognized by Maaco for operational excellence and performance for 2021.

“I had no experience repairing and painting vehicles,” said Hashemi, owner of Maaco San Diego, Maaco Oceanside, Maaco National City and Maaco San Marcos. “But I knew how to work with clients, and I knew that if I focused on satisfying clients with quality work and quick turnaround times, Maaco could teach me the rest.”

Hashemi bought his first franchise in Oceanside, Calif. In 2010. The following year he received the Maaco Rookie of the Year award. He then bought his second franchise in 2013 in National City, then a third in San Diego in 2014. He now has a fourth branch in San Marcos, which opened in 2016.

“Maaco has an exceptional business model with a long history of successful operations,” said Hashemi. “I used their expertise and followed the game manual and the whole company team was very helpful throughout the process. They have the training, brand recognition and advertising support to help their franchisees be successful.

Hashemi has received several awards during his 11 years as a franchise, most recently a regional Maaco Cup winner in 2021, recognizing him for his outstanding performances in the Southwestern United States. Hashemi attributed its success to the focus on both customer and employee satisfaction.

“We do everything we can to make sure every customer is happy, and I make sure our employees are too,” Hashemi added. “I treat all my employees like family. When your team is happy, they work hard to keep customers happy. I find it to be a winning formula.

[ad_1]

Two major litigation finance firms say loosening regulations in Arizona’s legal sector opens the door for them to co-own law firms.

Burford Capital Ltd. and executives at Longford Capital Management LP said that with Arizona no longer requiring lawyers to own firms – and other states considering similar measures – legal partners will increasingly consider the benefits of non-equity interests. -avocados.

“Equity investors will begin to notice this,” said William Farrell Jr., co-founder and managing director of Longford, in an interview. “The first of these groups will likely be large-scale funders like Longford Capital, because we have the best connections and knowledge about what makes law firms successful.”

The ownership of litigation finance would be a sea change in the way businesses are structured and managed. Currently, financiers pay for individual lawsuits – or portions thereof – with a goal of profit if their parties win. But ownership would give lenders more say in how companies spend their money and which cases they take.

The Arizona model would let Burford work in all parts of a legal transaction, said Emily Slater, Burford chief executive. Burford would be “a larger investor in the profitability of the business over time,” she said, and he could “take that risk with the business as it continues to grow or contract.” .

Mid-sized businesses and litigation shops may be willing to accept litigation lenders on property deals, said Marcie Borgal Shunk, president of The Tilt Institute, a Houston-based law firm.

“I see opportunities for collaboration, especially at customer request or looking for a market disruption,” Shunk said. “There are many disruptive and forward-thinking firms out there looking to find a new and better way to deliver legal services. There is no reason that litigation funders cannot be part of this equation. “

Arizona experience

Arizona’s experience took root when the state Supreme Court struck down its version of ethics rule 5.4 last year. This rule prohibited lay people from having an economic interest in law firms or other legal service operations.

The Supreme Court’s goal with this ruling was to try to increase low- and middle-income Arizonans’ access to legal services.

The state has so far approved 12 companies to participate in its alternative business structure program since the regulatory changes came into effect on January 1. The companies include LZ Legal Services, an Arizona-focused subsidiary of online business and consumer law giant LegalZoom.

Graphic: Jonathan Hurtarte / Bloomberg Law

Other companies have applied, including Rocket Lawyer, who is already part of the legal services experience in Utah. California, New York, Illinois, Michigan, and North Carolina are other states considering regulatory changes.

Farrell of Longford said his company would most likely refrain from acting on a law firm’s co-ownership until other states beyond Arizona relax their rules.

He said he has not spoken to any of the 12 companies in the Arizona program, although he has discussed related topics over the past year with attorneys from several law firms. Farrell declined to name them.

“Share loyalty”

AmLaw 200 company Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie, which has two offices in Arizona, has received a dozen calls and emails from most small private equity groups keen to discuss possible investments, Ken said Van Winkle, the managing partner of the company.

They all had the same answer: no. “It doesn’t work for us,” Van Winkle said.

Lewis Roca is expected to create a separate entity in Arizona because its offices in Colorado, Nevada, California and New Mexico are in states that prohibit non-legal business ownership, Van Winkle said.

He also said he was concerned about the search for profits that a funder or private investor would bring to a law firm partnership.

“Our work, our loyalty, our commitment is to our clients and not to an investor,” said Van Winkle. “I would worry about the possibility of divided loyalties.”

Such ownership could also compromise the independence of the lawyer, said Stephen Younger, a partner of Foley Hoag and former president of the New York Bar Association.

“If they were there,” he said of the litigation funders, “around the table at a partners meeting, it’s a very different dynamic”.

VIDEO: Roy Strom of Bloomberg Law provides an overview of the growing practice of litigation finance and explains what it means for the future of business law.

Profit motive

Longford and other litigation funders argue that their co-ownership roles would encourage companies to make sustained investments in innovations such as legal technology that would help them in the long run.

Farrell said the partnerships would benefit clients through reduced legal fees and by attracting senior C Suite executives, including non-lawyers, to run the new businesses.

Clients should not be concerned that profit motives may override the independence of lawyers under new ownership models, Burford chief executive Andrew Cohen said in a written statement.

Arizona Ethics Rule 2.1, for example, already requires lawyers to “exercise independent professional judgment,” regardless of external factors such as funding, he said.

“So when non-attorney ownership is allowed, when a lawyer is advising a client, their ethical obligation is first and foremost to that client, just like in any other type of funding situation,” Cohen said.

Industry growth

Litigation financing grew into a $ 39 billion industry worldwide in 2019, according to AmLaw 200 Brown Rudnick. While backers are typically only paid if the lawsuits result in monetary rewards, returns can reach two to three times their investment.

Burford said earlier this year that he will receive $ 103 million as a result of funding a lawsuit brought by Tatiana Akhmedova, the ex-wife of billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov, in the biggest financial dispute ever seen by UK divorce courts. Bloomberg News reported. Akhmedov agrees to pay 135 million pounds (186 million dollars).

Burford’s investment in a damages suit following Argentina’s 2012 nationalization of state-run oil producer YPF SA, known as the “Peterson” case, had grossed $ 236 million. dollars to the company in March.

But business doesn’t always end well. Pravati Capital, which works with individual attorneys and small firms, has been forced to arbitrate with at least 14 of its clients partly over allegations that deals with law firms guaranteed the company to be reimbursed even if the funded case loses, according to a Bloomberg Law account.

Pravati, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., Declined to answer questions about whether the company was considering businesses in Arizona due to the state law firm’s change in ownership rule.

Another litigation funder, Omni Bridgeway, also declined to comment.

Owners abroad

There is a precedent where litigation funders become co-owners of law firms abroad. In mid-2020, Burford acquired capital assumed a minority stake in the British law firm PCB Litigation.

But in the United States, other jurisdictions with larger legal markets must join Arizona in removing rule 5.4 – or at least approving experimental programs like the one in Utah, funding officials said. disputes.

That could happen within two to three years, Farrell said, as California and other major states have also started to assess the benefits of rule changes.

“It could become a popular trend,” Farrell said. “We want to be ready to seize the opportunities.

Sami Jasim was held in “a complex external operation” by Iraqi intelligence services, Kadhimi wrote on Twitter, without giving further details or saying where he was captured.

“Although we will not comment on any specific operations, we applaud our courageous Iraqi partners as they lead and regularly deal destructive blows at the remains of (IS),” said Lt. Col. Joel Harper, spokesperson for the coalition. led by the United States.

Jasim, an Iraqi national, is one of the main leaders of the Islamic State who can provide valuable information on the operations of the group, said Hassan Hassan, an expert on the group.

Mr Hassan, author of a book on the Islamic State and editor-in-chief of New Lines magazine, said Jasim was a member of ISIS’s highest governing council, the delegate committee, which has between a half -d dozen and a dozen members, and is a close aide to the group’s leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi.

Jasim is only the second top ISIS leader to be captured alive, Hassan said.

His role has expanded from the group’s financial supervisor to coordinating activities between Iraq and Syria, Hassan said.

“He is involved in ISIS’s day-to-day operations in Syria and Iraq, so strategically and tactically this is an important capture for the Iraqis,” Hassan said.

“Usually (IS leaders) blow themselves up or fight to the bitter end.”

In Iraq, ISIS militants continue to carry out regular attacks on Iraqi state police, military and paramilitary units, and have killed dozens of police and military personnel over the past year.

While the Islamic State has been driven out of much of the territory it once held in Syria and Iraq several years ago, Western military officials estimate that it still has at least 10,000 fighters in the two countries. , usually in remote areas.

The US-led coalition worked with Iraqi security forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in Syria against the remnants of the group.

Baghdadi, who declared himself the leader of a cross-border “caliphate” in Syria and Iraq in 2014, was killed during a US special forces operation in northwestern Syria in 2019.

According to the website of the US State Department’s anti-terrorism rewards program, Rewards for Justice, Jasim has “been instrumental in managing the finances of ISIS’s terrorist operations.”

Jasim has a $ 5 million ($ 6.79 million) bounty on his head as part of the State Department program.

“While he was ISIS’s deputy in southern Mosul in 2014, he was said to have been the equivalent of ISIS’s finance minister, overseeing the group’s income-generating operations from illicit sales of oil, gas, antiques and minerals, “the statement said.

  • Jon Henes served as national finance chairman for Kamala Harris’ presidential candidacy.
  • The experience changed his view of the world and opened his eyes to the importance of diversity.
  • Henes launched C Street Advisory Group to help CEOs advance diversity and inclusion.

For most people, serving as national finance chairman for Kamala Harris’s presidential candidacy would be seen as an opportunity of a lifetime. But for Jon Henes, it meant a lot more.

On Harris’ campaign trail, Henes, who is white, has established relationships with hundreds of people from a multitude of backgrounds, especially in black and Hispanic communities. He spent day after day listening to Harris speak on reducing income inequality and reforming education. But he clearly remembers being especially moved at a private event in early 2019 when Harris told him, “The vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us.”

After this conversation, he felt inspired to do more meaningful work with his career. Today, after nearly three years of reflection, Henes launched C Street Advisory Group, a consultancy focused on diversity, equity and inclusion. C Street, whose name is a nod to C-suite, employs 15 people and is funded by Antara Capital, a Blackstone-backed hedge fund.

Henes said he “saw the strength and power of diversity” while volunteering for Harris. He added, “His words made me look for commonalities, fight every day to do better personally and to make the world a better and fairer place.”

C Street Advisory Group is built on four key pillars: business advice, talent advice, DCI strategy and consultation on social justice issues. The company is poised to compete with other large consulting firms such as Teneo.

“I think what makes us different is that we designed C Street for this time in the company’s history,” said Henes. “To get the right DEI you will need to bring in talent and you will need communications. You will need governance advice. You may need executive advice to entice some people who may not believe in your mission.

The murder of George Floyd in the summer of 2020 shook CEOs. Along with billion dollar investments in racial equity, they rushed to hire DCI consultants and executives. But in Henes’ eyes, there is still work to be done. And to do this job, he hired a team of race relations specialists, scientific researchers, executive consultants and lawyers.

Alvin Tillery, a DCI and race relations consultant with more than two decades of experience advising Fortune 500 companies, heads DCI at C Street. Thomas Ogorzalek, a research scientist with over 15 years of experience analyzing public policy, public opinion and race in the United States, is also part of this team.

“Whether it’s young employees or big investors pushing for change, what companies need to understand is that they need to do more than show off,” said Henes. “They have to make it systemic.”

Henes spent 25 years as a restructuring, crisis and corporate governance legal advisor to CEOs. His goal for next year is to build a list of top customers. Over the next five years, he wants to change the way American businesses talk about diversity.

“Quite frankly, we want to make systemic diversity, equity and inclusion the norm,” he said. “We want the country to celebrate our unique and incredible diversity and understand that if we come together there is no limit to what we can accomplish.”

They say great minds are alike, and for Dutch twins Joyce and Raissa De Haas, 30, it couldn’t be more fitting.

The sisters do everything together, from studying the same course in college, having the same friends, and even building a successful business together.

Double Dutch (pun intended) was created by the twins in 2015 after they realized there was a gap in the market for soda and tonic blenders – although their careers began in the originated a little differently.

Speaking to My London about their iconic name, Raissa said: “S Someone said oh you should call it Double Dutch, we thought it was pretty funny but the next day it really stuck.

“Being twins works great, we know each other by heart. It’s quite effective because we just say it as it is. Working together is not so bad, our social lives are quite intertwined because we have a lot of the same friends, we’re constantly together so it’s a lot of fun. “

The twins were born and raised in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, the birthplace of gin. As the Netherlands is the center of gin, it’s not uncommon for houses to contain old distilleries and Joyce and Raissa grew up with one in their backyard.

Joyce and Raissa’s parents taught the girls everything about the different types of gins, vodkas and wines and the family also lived near many local distilleries.

By the time the sisters went to college to study finance, they knew all about the spirit world. However, they noticed that there wasn’t a big progression with blenders, especially sodas and tonics.

So the couple started making theirs and trying them out with friends at college parties and nights.

“W e started to organize our own parties, but wenever really thought about doing it seriously, we saw it more as a hobby. Then we graduated, but when we started working in finance we realized it wasn’t for us, ”said Raissa.

Joyce and Raissa took a risk and quit their finance jobs before moving to London in 2013 to study an MSc in Entrepreneurship at UCL.

In college, the twins researched the mixology industry to find out where there were gaps in the market. They graduated in 2014 with the Double Dutch concept and received an award for having the business plan of the year.

They launched their first two blenders, cucumber and watermelon, and pomegranate and basil in 2016 and the pair now have up to 12 flavors, although cucumber and watermelon are the most popular.

Double Dutch has proven to be a huge success not only in London, but also in 40 other countries around the world. Next is the United States, where the twins will be living for the next few months as they launch Double Dutch in the United States.

Joyce and Raissa are well aware that the mixology industry is predominantly male, so they created a bartending program exclusively for 20 women.

The 12 week course has been a success so far and Raissa is looking forward to welcoming the next cohort in 2022.

She said: “So far this has been truly amazing and the feedback we have received from the bartenders has been very positive. We’ll probably be relaunching it next year for a new batch of female bartenders that we want to support – we’re driving this change ourselves.

“It sounds really exciting, our industry is pretty male dominated, but I think it’s becoming a lot more inclusive and I think it’s a good time to make the necessary changes – w We know we set ourselves apart from our male competitors because we are memorable. “

Washington, DC (STL.News) The Securities and Exchange Commission today indicted a former CFO of Amazon.com Inc. and two insider trading family members before Amazon’s earnings announcement between January 2016 and July 2018.

According to the SEC complaint, Laksha Bohra worked as a senior executive in Amazon’s tax department, where she prepared and reviewed the calculations used to finalize the figures included in Amazon’s quarterly and annual earnings that were filed with the SEC. From January 2016 until July 2018, Laksha Bohra reportedly acquired and tipped her husband Viky bohra with highly confidential information about Amazon’s financial performance. The complaint alleges that Viky Bohra and his father, Gotham Bohra, exchanged this confidential information in 11 separate accounts maintained by different members of the Bohra family. The complaint further alleges that Laksha Bohra ignored quarterly reminders prohibiting him from transmitting material non-public information or recommending the purchase or sale of Amazon securities. As alleged, the family has reaped illicit profits of around $ 1.4 million from their illegal trading in Amazon securities.

“We assert that the Bohras have repeatedly and systematically used Amazon’s confidential information for their own benefit,” said Erin Schneider, director of the SEC’s regional office in San Francisco. “Employees with access to confidential company information that could influence the market cannot use this information to enrich themselves, to enrich their friends or their family. “

The SEC complaint, filed in federal court in Seattle, accuses the three Bohras of violating anti-fraud provisions of federal securities laws. The three Bohras consented to the entry of final judgments permanently prohibiting them from continuing to violate the offending provisions, and ordering them to pay a total restitution of $ 1,428,094, total pre-judgment interest of $ 118,406 and total penalties of $ 1,106,399.

In a parallel action, the US District Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington today filed criminal charges against Viky Bohra.

The SEC investigation was conducted by Sallie Kim, with assistance from Marc Katz and Andrew Hefty, under the supervision of Monique C. Winkler of the San Francisco regional office. Darren Boerner of the Market Abuse Unit also participated in the investigation. The SEC appreciates the assistance of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
